Jaundice is caused by an infection which distorts the liver into malfunctioning. It is unable to produce the normal amount of bile needed for maintaining the functions of body cells and tissues. Due to unhealthy body cells and tissues, the skin and more noticeably the white of eyes get a yellow tint. In Ayurvedic treatment of Jaundice, the disease is considered an imbalance of pitta, one of the three body humours. The intestinal region is full of toxins causing the imbalance. These toxins need to be flushed out to restore balance and bring the immune system back to normal.
The common cause of Jaundice is hepatitis -A virus and obstruction by gall bladder stones.

Ayurvedic home remedies you can try:
- To prevent a sluggish liver, drink chicory tea throughout the day.
- Grind aloe vera leaves into a paste, add a pinch of ginger and black salt, and consume for two weeks.
- Begin the morning with eight ounces of tomato juice with a dash of salt and pepper.
- Heat a quart of water with a cup of barley until boiling, cool, and consume by the end of the day.
- Combine four ounces of lemon juice with an equal amount of beet juice. Drink for several days.
- Process radishes, bitter gourd, and other bitter vegetables. Press the juice from the pulp, and drink six to eight ounces every day.
Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations:
- It is advisable to drink 8 glasses of water daily.
- Leafy green vegetables and fruits are also beneficial for patients of jaundice.
- Foods like coffee, alcohol, red meat and white sugar should be totally avoided.
- Intake of dairy products like cheese and milk should be cut down.
- A jaundice-afflicted person requires plenty of sleep and rest.
- A diet including lots of orange juice, sugarcane juice and barley water is prescribed for jaundice patients.
Treatment in Ayurveda:
Ayurveda offers very effective treatments for all types of viral hepatitis.
Problems like obstructive jaundice which is caused by gallbladder stones should be treated by a surgeon.
A strict diet regime has to be followed during the entire treatment period and it is better to continue as vegetarian
Therapies like Thakradhara, Vaman, Virachan etc are also advised.
