Depression is a state where the person experiences continuous low mood, self-esteem, energy, appetite and poor concentration. Rajasic and Tamasic symptoms like anxiety, constipation, disturbed sleep, sadness, tearfulness, feelings of guilt, irritation, lack of motivation, reduced sexual interest, changes in menstrual cycle, suicidal tendencies, avoiding family and friends become dominant. Ayurveda deals with this state, by controlling Kapha which heavily dominates the nervous system at this time, in order to control the imbalance of overreaction of the brain (Vata disorder) which further triggers the loss of metabolic activity (Pitta disorder). Ayurveda is the only medical science that has effective therapy against depression as it recognizes it as a disorder.
