Ayurvedic Management of Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints. A joint is the area where two bones meet. There are over 100 different types of arthritis
Joint inflammation may result from:

  • An autoimmune disease (the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue)
  • Broken bone
  • General "wear and tear" on joints
  • Infection, usually by bacteria or virus

Common types are

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis, is a group of mechanical abnormalities involving degradation of joints,[1] including articular cartilage and subchondral bone.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-term disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. It can also affect other organs. The cause of RA is unknown. RA can occur at any age, but is more common in middle age. Women get RA more often than men.
  • Gout is a kind of arthritis that occurs when uric acid builds up in blood and causes joint inflammation

Ayurveda considers osteoarthritis as a vitiation of vata and other arthritis should be diagnosed by an Ayurvedic physician to find the proper Ayurvedic diagnosis and dosha conditions.

Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations:

  • Splints or orthotics to support joints and help improve their position; this is often needed for rheumatoid arthritis
  • Water therapy and Massage
  • Low-impact aerobic activity (also called endurance exercise)
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Avoid staying in one position for too long.
  • Avoid positions or movements that place extra stress on your sore joints.
  • Change your home to make activities easier.
  • Try stress-reducing activities, such as meditation or yoga
  • Eat a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, which contain important vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin E.
  • Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as cold water fish (salmon, mackerel, and herring), flaxseed, rapeseed (canola) oil, soybeans, soybean oil, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts.
  • Lose weight, if you are overweight.

Ayurvedic home remedies you can try:

  • Consume only juices, vegetables, herbs and spices until the tongue is clear of coating.
  • Use tongue cleaners
  • Consider using an enema or other method of clearing the colon quickly.
  • Use castor oil or coconut oil to aid in the manipulation of joints and muscles.
  • Include Ginger, Turmeric and garlic in your daily diet

Treatment in Ayurveda:
Ayurvedic treatment of arthritis is started with a detailed consultation with Ayurvedic physician and diagnosing the type of disease and vitiation of doshas and other factors
Therapies like Pizhichil, Abhyanga, Njavarakizhi, Sneha vasti, Kashaya vasti etc. are administrated along with internal herbal medication.
A routine of yoga and other exercises are prescribed as a follow up.

Note: Treatments mentioned here should be done only under the supervision of qualified Ayurvedic doctor.
